What was Tommy Job on Martin?

However, as the episodes progress, more evidence suggests that Tommy actually has a job. An example is when Martin mentioned that he was going to pick Tommy up from get off work, but Tommy made sure Martin didn’t see which building he was from. When Martin needed money to run his restaurant, Marty Matt’s Meatloaf and Waffles ; it was Tommy who met an investor through work and brought him brought to the negotiating table. Even though that investor is ultimately the corrupt Stan, Martin’s former boss at WZUP radio station, Tommy still proves his connections through the work he does for a living.

“Tommy does have a job, and I’ll give you a hint,” she said slyly. “The woman I want to hit, she’s Martin’s teacher; Beverly Johnson, this is the first time you hear about Tommy’s work. Tommy talks about joining the Boys and Girls Club. He’s the Boys and Girls Club Consultant. That’s how he makes a living.”

In season five , we get even more solid evidence that Tommy’s job is real. The eighth episode of season five tells the story of Tommy taking a group of friends on a ski trip. He introduced the team to Aquinetta, who he called a colleague. Aquineta shared with everyone how great Tommy is at work. She had no reason to drive all the way to the ski slopes to lie down. Gosh, she’s more focused on tracking down Pam’s date, the black power guy who woke up before we all knew what “waking up” meant. So this proves that Tommy does have a job. As viewers, we’ll never know exactly what the job is. However, in 2016, Tisha Campbell revealed in an interview what Tommy’s real job is. She reveals that Tommy is an advisor to the Boys and Girls Club. Even though I’ve watched the series over the years, I just thought Tommy volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club, so I’m still unsure of my decision on that. But if anyone knows, it must be Tisha or any star in the cast.

Overview of the character tommy and his job.

In the seasons that followed, the running joke was Tommy didn’t have a job. His friends never knew for sure what he did for a living, but he was always dressed fly and shit. After doing a stakeout with Gina to learn if Tommy was “shaking is ass for cash” and doing illegal work, Martin’s character seem to give up in finding out what his best friend did for a living. Pam, Gina and Cole characters seemed to have the same sentiment as Martin. So throughout the show, any time Tommy mentioned work, they all would say, “Man, you ain’t got no job!”.

The answer was right there all along. Tommy was gainfully employed. It wasn’t until Thomas Mikal Ford started pestering the writers about the further development of his character that they decided to have fun and keep his profession ambiguous as a wide-open launch pad for easy jokes.

When his job is brought up people say, “Tommy, you ain’t got no job!” This particularly annoys Martin because while Tommy always alludes or refers to himself being employed, he’s never clear about the type of job that he has. However, Martin is sometimes cautious because Tommy’s line of work is unknown and suspicious. Tommy is the only character to appear in every episode of the series. In later years they said that Tommy Strawn worked with children. That was his 9-5 job.

Analysis of the impact of tommy’s job on the show.

However, more evidence that Tommy actually had a job reveals itself through the show’s run. One example was when Martin mentioned picking Tommy up from work, but Tommy made sure Martin didn’t see what building he came out of. Also, when Martin needed money for his restaurant, Marty Mart’s Meatloaf and Waffles ; it was Tommy who knew an investor through his job and brought him to the table. Although, that investor ended up being crooked Stan, Martin’s former boss at the radio station WZUP, Tommy still proved he got the connect from whatever work he did for a living.

“Tommy really did have a job, I’ll give you a hint,” she slyly noted. “The woman I was gonna fight, she was Martin’s teacher; Beverly Johnson, in that episode that’s the first time you hear about Tommy’s job. So Tommy talks about him being in the Boys & Girls Club. He was a counselor at the Boys & Girls Club. That’s what he did for a living.”.

In season five , we get more hardcore proof that Tommy’s job is real. Episode eight of season five shows the gang of friends on a Ski Trip that they’re invited to come on by Tommy. He introduces Aquanetta to the group, who he said was his co-worker. Aquanetta shared with the group how great of a worker Tommy was at their job. She had no reason to come all the way to a ski slope to lie. Hell she was more focused on hunching Pam’s date, the Black Power guy, who was woke before we all knew what “woke” was. This therefore proves Tommy in fact had a job. As a viewer, we would never know what that job was specifically. However in 2016, Tisha Campbell revealed in an interview what Tommy’s real job was. She shared that Tommy was a Counselor for the Boys & Girls club. Although watching the show all these years, I just thought Tommy was doing volunteer work at the Boys & Girls Club, so for me the jury is still out on that. But if anyone would know, it would be Tisha or any star of the cast.
